If there is one factor that can transform an extension, conversion or new house project from the ordinary into something truly special, it is good design.  Good quality design goes far beyond mere functionality.  The clever use of space, light and aspect in a well-designed home can change the way you feel and even the way you live – it is worth every penny and more.  Yet for some reason, design is the most undervalued and least appreciated element of the entire home improvement industry.

Some homeowners are more than happy to spend tens of thousands on bolt-on conservatories, loft extensions, extensions, new kitchens and luxury bathrooms, but when it comes to design, most invest no more than the bare minimum – just enough to get them Planning Permission and Building Regulation approval.  The result is that little, if any, creative design input goes into the majority of the home improvement projects until the decorating and furnishing stage, by which time it is too late to change the fundamentals.  The result is a rapidly growing stock of homes with odd, awkward layouts and poor circulation – homes with lots of rooms, but no sense of space.

Judging by some of the homes we have seen recently, millions are being spent every year on home ‘improvements’ that take away almost as much as they add; the new luxury bathroom added on the ground floor of a home away from all of the bedrooms; the elegant conservatory that faces due south and turns out to be an oven in summer and a freezer in winter; the extension that turns an existing larger room into dead corridor space; the new dining room that is too narrow for a table that you can comfortably sit around.  We’ve all seen it in ‘neighbours and friends’ homes, or when viewing homes for sale.

Most of us instinctively know when a room is not working – so why is it that so many of us still get it so wrong, and why are we so reluctant to consult an expert for help?. Appointing us for your project is not as expensive as you might think, and we will endeavour to make an invaluable contribution to your project.

Instead of having your dreams and ambitions worn away by the conflicting advice of builders, friends, the planners and the bloke down the pub who once did an extension you will have an expert to guide you smoothly through the design process.  Steven will look at your home as a whole, rethinking the function of each space, integrating the new with the old to achieve the most valuable layout.

It may take a leap of faith to start knocking down parts of your house when you are meant to be adding to it, but in the hands of a good designer it is remarkable how a home can be transformed by simply removing a few walls, adding a small extension and remodelling the space.
